Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran began recording music in 2005 but headed to Los Angeles in 2010 to try and make it big. While playing an open mic night, Sheeran was spotted by actor/musician Jamie Foxx who recognized his talent and took Ed under his wing. Sheeran’s first album was released in 2011, and a year later he was collaborating with (and opening for) Taylor Swift, catapulting him to major fame—and for good reason. For $5, give his first album a listen.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Supertramp

When you’re starting out, it’s fairly typical for a band to make a living off essentially nothing. Eating ramen noodles and sleeping six guys to a studio apartment is more of the standard than the exception. All the sacrifice is worth it when you catch your first big break and get noticed to by a record label. Today’s band started much differently—they came from a penthouse, not an outhouse.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Nirvana, Unplugged

Nirvana filmed this landmark performance in a single take, which had never happened before on MTV’s Unplugged. Their set ended with a cover of an old blues song, “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” which is now regarded by many as one of the greatest single live performances in music history. It’s included on the album, which you can score for only five bucks.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Cage The Elephant

You should definitely pick this one up today if you’re into rock music. It’s like indie-folk songwriting meets a super-laid-back, yet energetic punk-rock band that was influenced by 90’s grunge. If that sentence doesn’t make sense—good, it shouldn’t. That sort of sums up their eclectic sound. Take those five singles earmarked for the vending machine and put them toward this album instead, it’s worth it.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Bad Company

Supergroups tend to be an amazing idea on paper, but once the music hits the airwaves, they don’t live up to the hype. Today’s band was certainly legit, but they don’t perhaps get the recognition they deserve. With over 20 million albums sold worldwide, it’s a bit surprising they aren’t more of a household name.

Don't be scared off by the hair! Badfinger, a group signed to the Beatles' own label, created some awesome music but never seemed to get the recognition they deserved...until now. For five bucks you can give their sound a whirl—and you won't be disappointed. The top three tracks stack up to anything Lennon or McCartney put out.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Violent Femmes

Many of you reading this today are probably located in TDS’ home state of Wisconsin. The list of bands from this state to make it big is short and you could probably count them on one hand. Although it’s rare, today’s band is one of them – and while it may have happened in an unusual fashion, it happened, and the music world is better off for it.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Soundgarden

You could probably make a list of bands who benefited from the Nirvana grunge revolution, and Soundgarden would certainly be one of them. They started with a small cult following, were then “discovered” by the masses, and produced one of the best albums of the ‘90s—Superunknown. Today that top-selling, and still awesome, album can be yours for $5.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Lady Antebellum

What would you say about a band that in their first six years of existence sold more than 12.5 million digital singles and over 10 million albums in the United States alone? You’d probably tell me those are stats for Taylor Swift or some other major pop music artist. Well in today’s case, not only would you be wrong – but it’s an artist that unless you’re into country music, you may not have even heard of.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: The Smashing Pumpkins

Today’s band was always ‘the next big thing’–referred to as the “next Jane’s Addiction,” then the “next Nirvana,” then the “next Pearl Jam.” While somewhat flattering to be compared with those great groups, all this band wanted to do was step out of that limelight and become their own household name. They succeeded in spades and you can score their second album today for only $5.
