When the NHL announced the 4 Nations Face-Off, its brand new in-season hockey tournament featuring the best players from Canada, United States, Finland, and Sweden, many critics wondered—Would the players actually buy in?
Following an incredible opening overtime thriller between Canada and Sweden last Wednesday, it became clear the league struck gold with this best-on-best tournament format. Then, last Saturday, the highly awaited matchup between Canada and the USA started off with a bang, featuring three old school hockey fights within seconds of the opening faceoff.
Not only was the 3-1 American victory in Montreal a thriller, but the intertest was shared by the public. The ABC broadcast averaged 4.4 million viewers, with a peak of 5.2 million—the most of any non-Stanley Cup Final hockey telecast since 2019, including other playoff hockey games.
On Thursday, Feb. 20, the rematch between the USA and Canada is set. The championship game will shift from Montreal to the TD Garden in Boston. Will the Americans be able to trounce their neighbors to the north for the second time in a row? Or will Canada continue to rise to the occasion when it matters most?
Tune in to this epic showdown and find out!
