Ask any bar or restaurant owner and they’ll tell you – the NFL is still king. Last year, 38 of the top 50 primetime telecasts were NFL games, with the championship between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles drawing in nearly 115 million viewers. Not only was last year’s matchup the most viewed title game of all time – it was also the most popular U.S. TV program ever.
But – as they say – records are meant to be broken. This Sunday’s heavyweight showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers can be found on CBS, Nickelodeon, and Paramount+ at 5:30 p.m. CST.

In the meantime, here are three of the biggest storylines to follow this Sunday:
- Mahomes chasing history
Ever since Tom Brady retired with seven championship rings, most people (including myself) believed his legacy as the greatest football player of all time would never be questioned. However, Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes is putting himself in that conversation.
Since taking over as the starting quarterback in 2018, Mahomes has now led his team to the Big Game in four of his six seasons. Already a two-time champion, Mahomes has the opportunity to earn his third title in six years!
- It’s a love story
Just as Mahomes is working to become the greatest quarterback of all time, another Chief is building his legacy as the greatest tight end to ever play – Mahomes’ No. 1 receiver, Travis Kelce.
During this year’s playoffs, the 34-year-old made history when he surpassed Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice for the most postseason receptions of all time (156). However, Kelce has been drawing headlines on and off the field all season long, due to his developing relationship with the No. 1 recording artist in the world – Taylor Swift!
Taylor is fresh off two Grammy Award wins last Sunday. Will Travis follow suit and bring home some hardware?
- Irrelevant is Purdy good, after all…
In the NFL Draft, being the last player selected earns you an unfortunate nickname – “Mr. Irrelevant.” However, 49ers second-year quarterback Brock Purdy has been anything but since he took over as the starting quarterback in December 2022.
Last year, Purdy rattled off seven straight wins to close out the regular season, before leading his team to the NFC Championship game against the Eagles. Unfortunately, Purdy suffered an elbow injury early in that game, and was unable to punch the 49ers’ ticket to the Big Game.
