Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Guns N’ Roses

Debut albums for a band can truly be hit or miss. Sometimes a band is still tinkering with the lineup or even their sound so what you get is a hodgepodge of old stuff written by the lead singer before the band got started. Or, sometimes you’ll get a bunch of random tracks that the band had no time practice but were forced out in the studio. But, every once in a while, you get a debut album that makes music history–although it’s very rare, when it happens, that album becomes music legend.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Rush

Many friends of mine tell me they just can’t get over Geddy Lee’s vocals, and it makes Rush a tough listen. This album might be a great introduction for those types, as there is quite a bit of instrumental on this record, and it can give you a great appreciation for what they were doing. I think this album is a near perfect blend of top 40’s radio and pure rock music. If you’re a fan of simply well done rock music, it should be right in your wheelhouse.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Bruno Mars

Peter Hernandez was born in October of 1985 in Honolulu, Hawaii. At the age of 2, Peter was given the nickname of Bruno because of a striking resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. The Mars surname was added later, as a differentiator between him and other Hispanic pop artists. He moved to LA to become a star but it took a while—he was a well-known writer and producer before being known as a musical artist. His first album is proof that good things come to those who wait.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Live

To say this album is a 90s icon is probably an understatement. Five tracks on the record saw major radio play as singles, and those may not even be the best songs here. This album helped to start the trend of post-grunge music in that era. It was like grunge had grown up into an adult and I think this album portrays that image perfectly. It's definitely an iconic album from a great decade of music, and can be yours today for only $5.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Incubus

Don't let the "alternative" or "alt rock" label on this band scare you away—they're so much more. There's rock guitar, a little funk beat, and even a touch of reggae in spots. Put it all together, and it's probably something you've never experienced before...but for the same price as a fancy drink at Starbucks, you can give it a listen.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Dire Straits

This is one of the best-selling albums worldwide at over 30 million sold; it’s the eighth best-selling all time in the UK; it won two Grammy awards in 1986, and it sits at #51 on the Greatest Albums of All Time list. Five bucks for such an outstanding album, almost seems like you’re robbing Amazon.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Meat Puppets

Metaphorically speaking, which deserves more credit; the band that sold millions of albums, or the guys that influenced that band? I’ve heard this question raised many times in the music industry, as it’s fairly common for a band to have gotten started because they heard some local band rock out as teenagers. Today’s band, The Meat Puppets, was most definitely the influencer of a very big 90s band that I seem to talk about every week.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Zac Brown Band

Success doesn’t always come overnight. Bands can struggle to book gigs for decades before signing that major record deal. Heck, sometimes bands never make it big—they continue to play your local, dusty theater until they all decide to get real jobs. Today’s band didn’t have to wait very long to see success, and when they got the ball rolling, they darn near shot to the moon.

Cheap Tunes Tuesday: Hole

Seems like every band has their fair share of drama. Usually your typical addiction or ego type problems, but sometimes it goes a bit deeper than that. Today’s band started off innocent enough – but years later became the centerpiece of one of the biggest controversies in rock and roll history.
