Big things are happening at Mooresville High School! With the help of a $10,000 STEM-Ed grant from TDS Telecom, the North Carolina school is gearing up to open its very own SparkLab—a cutting-edge learning space designed to ignite curiosity and prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

What’s a SparkLab?

SparkLabs, created by SparkNC, are more than just high-tech classrooms. They’re collaborative hubs where students dive into hands-on projects in fields like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, coding, robotics, game and app development, and digital media. These spaces are built to help students explore, create, and develop the skills needed for modern, high-wage careers.

Mooresville High School’s SparkLab is expected to open in spring 2026 and aligns perfectly with the district’s strategic priority of Maximizing Opportunity and Achievement—ensuring every student graduates ready for the future.

What will the grant Fund?

The TDS STEM-Ed grant will provide essential technology to bring the SparkLab to life, including:

  • A high-performance workstation for AI, game design, and cybersecurity projects
  • A collaborative display for shared coding and media design
  • Networking upgrades for secure, high-speed connectivity
  • Audio-visual equipment to enable hybrid learning with other SparkLabs across North Carolina
  • Robotics and maker-tech kits for hands-on engineering projects
  • Tech accessories to keep the lab organized and accessible

“We are so grateful to TDS for selecting us for this grant,” said Tracey Waid, secondary curriculum and instruction coordinator at Mooresville Graded School District. “We think this will truly be life-changing for our students and our community.”

Drew Petersen, TDS Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs, echoed that sentiment.

“TDS believes in helping open doors for young people in our community. By supporting MHS’ new SparkLab, we’re investing in the skills and curiosity that will power Mooresville High School’s STEM education for years to come.”
