Considering the chatter about strong password requirements and enhanced cybersecurity measures across most applications, it may seem surprising just how … terrible …. many passwords still are.

Yet, that is exactly what NordPass continues to find when analyzing people’s password habits. For the sixth year, the password manager completed a study and found, in its own words, “they’re still really bad.” Together with NordStellar, the organization reviewed a 2.5-terabyte database extracted from publicly available sources across 44 countries.

Unsurprisingly, “123456” and “password” are high on the list. However, “dragon” and “monkey” appearing in the top 20 may be a little more of a revelation (2024 was the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac – a good example of how passwords become commonly used across large groups of people based on social context).

Here are the worst passwords of 2024:

  1. 123456
  2. 123456789
  3. 12345678
  4. password

  7. 111111
  8. 12345
  9. secret
  10. 123123
  11. 1234567890
