The LEGO Movie
No film in 2014 is as fun and entertaining as “The LEGO Movie.” What could have been a simple product placement exercise is instead a film that works on multiple levels. Adults and kids alike will love the sweetness, nostalgia and humor. Audiences agree as “The LEGO Movie” has raked in over $250 million in the United States since its release. Perfect for the entire family. Available June 17.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
The reboot of Jack Ryan (originally brought to the screen in 1990 in “The Hunt For Red October”) is a smart and engaging thriller. The movie has its share of action, but it focuses more on brains than brawn. Chris Pine stars in the title role, but director Kenneth Branagh stands out as the film’s villain. Available June 10.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Director Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom) scores with this beautiful film recounting the adventures of Gustave H (expertly played by Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between world wars. Fiennes becomes involved the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for a family fortune. The film is – plain and simple – wonderful. Available June 17.
Liam Neeson is back. No one has taken his family, but they are attempting to mess with the Irish film star. Neeson plays a U.S. Air Marshal aboard a transatlantic flight who receives a text stating that someone will die unless $150 million is wired to a bank account within 20 minutes. Cue the fun. “Non-Stop” is top-notch suspense. Available June 10.
NBA and NHL Finals
Who will be standing in the end? The NBA features the reigning champion Miami Heat battling the San Antonio Spurs on ABC (Game 3 is June 10, while Game 4 is June 12). In the fight to hoist up the Stanley Cup, it’s the New York Rangers taking on the Los Angeles Kings on NBC with Game 3 and 4 scheduled for June 9 and 11, respectively.
